The Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA) NSW is the professional association for people interested in strategic issues, policy, reform and innovation in public sector management. Our mission is to enhance the capacity, capability and reputation of the public sector in NSW.

IPAA NSW has a diverse membership comprising of public servants from all tiers of government, business executives, consultants and academics. Membership is open to any individual passionate about his/her career and about the professionalism and reputation of the public sector in NSW. IPAA NSW recently signed Corporate Partnership agreements with eight NSW Government clusters and three smaller Government organisations, resulting in a threefold increase in membership numbers. In addition to overseeing the whole membership function of IPAA NSW, a Membership Manager is required to maintain and support IPAA’s corporate relationships appropriately to ensure that they are getting the most value from the partnership. They will develop and implement strategies to retain and service IPAA NSW’s members as well as strategies for acquiring new members, particularly in the Local Government, Federal Government, and Not-for-Profit sectors.

About the role

The Membership Manager plays a key leadership role in enabling IPAA NSW to serve the interests of its members and those working in and with the NSW public sector. This role’s primary focus is to manage the membership functions of IPAA NSW, ensuring that systems, resources and communications are current and meet the needs of members and the organisation.

This position manages IPAA NSW’s Corporate Partnerships with eight NSW State Government clusters and numerous Agency partnerships; maintaining and renewing agreements and fostering positive relationships with each organisation, increasing member engagement and participation, with an ongoing focus of adding value. The Membership Manager will identify opportunities to build awareness, build a vast community of members and their data to be able to promote IPAA and showcase its products and services.

This position is a main point of contact for members and assists in the promotion and marketing of the organisation’s services. This position works closely with other IPAA staff to manage the EventsPro membership database including registering new IPAA members, annual renewals, monthly rollover and maintaining accurate membership records within the database.


Roles and responsibilities

The Membership Manager position has 10 core outcomes and accountabilities:

Managing the membership functions of IPAA NSW; ensuring that systems, resources and communications are current and meet the needs of members and the organisation
Managing all membership within IPAA NSW’s including Corporate and Agency Partnerships; development and management of agreements, engagement initiatives and membership activities and benefits
Organising and attending quarterly meetings with Corporate and Agency partners and maintaining a positive relationship
Effective reporting of membership utilisation and other requested information for Corporate and Agency partners and the organisation
Building and developing membership strategy; engagement, retention and acquisition
Developing a strategy to target Local and Federal Public Sector and Not for Profit organisations
Identify opportunities to build awareness, build a vast community of members and their data to be able to promote IPAA and showcase our services
Accurately entering and maintaining data in the CRM system, creating reports as required and suggesting improvements where necessary for internal systems and processes
Ensuring all transactions and instructions from members are processed in a timely manner
Supporting the organisation’s customer service focus by maintaining a high level of customer service and communication across the IPAA office, the NSW and National Councils, Divisions, members and relevant internal and external stakeholders.

Knowledge, skills and experience required


Previous experience working in a membership management role
Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise and negotiate effectively with a diverse range of people
High level organisational skills including the ability to prioritise, cope with complex situations, work to deadlines, multi-task and balance strategic and operational roles
Excellent research, writing and presentation skills to produce high quality communications, resources and presentations
Ability to work autonomously and within a team based working environment
Act with personal and professional integrity
Well-developed skills in Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel and Outlook.
